Is $3.5 Million A Good Deal?

Happy Super Bowl Monday, everyone! I hope you guys had a good time
watching the game, or if you’re like a lot of people I know, watching the
commercials.

Super Bowl commercials are usually known for two things: being dominated
by beer companies, and being really expensive.

A 30-second commercial during this year’s largest sporting event costs a
company an estimated $3.5 million. Yep, that’s not cheap. People usually
make a big deal out of this number (which seems to be growing every year).
“That’s so much money!” “They should do something better with that money!”
“I can’t believe they are wasting that much money for 30 seconds!” But as
Social Media becomes more and more relevant in today’s world, that $3.5
million is actually looking like a pretty good deal.

It’s predicted that more than 163 million people watched this year’s Super
Bowl on NBC. That is nearly half of the population of the whole United
States. Now, let’s add in how many people will watch your 30 second
commercial on YouTube the weeks following the Super Bowl. As of right now,
Honda’s new ad for the CRV has more than 12 million views on YouTube
alone. Now let’s add on the other estimated 20 million views it will
receive on Honda’s Facebook page. That adds up to be more than 195,000,000
viewers. If we do the math it shows the Honda paid a little  over $0.01
per view. Does it seem like such a bad deal now?

Social Media is helping brands continue their brand messaging in a huge
way. Just imagine what kind of presence Honda could have made if it would
have showed a sneak peek of its commercial and told viewers to watch the
ending on its YouTube page — those YouTube and Facebook numbers could
have doubled.

You can check out the commercial here.
